Counselling for stress, anxiety and low mood

There are times when life can feel like too much. Your thoughts may be difficult to quieten, everyday demands may feel overwhelming, or you might have lost the energy and interest you once had. Even when you appear to be coping on the outside, things may feel very different within.

Counselling offers a confidential place to pause and begin making sense of what is happening. You do not need to arrive with a clear explanation or know exactly where to begin.

When things begin to feel overwhelming

Stress is a natural response to pressure, but prolonged stress can gradually affect your emotional and physical wellbeing. You may find it harder to sleep or concentrate, become more irritable, or feel that you are constantly rushing without ever catching up.

Anxiety can leave you anticipating what might go wrong. Thoughts may circle repeatedly, ordinary decisions can feel daunting and it may become increasingly difficult to relax. Sometimes there is an identifiable reason for feeling anxious; at other times, the cause is less obvious.

Low mood can affect motivation, confidence and your ability to feel connected to the people and activities that usually matter to you. You may withdraw from others or find yourself simply going through the motions of everyday life.

These experiences often overlap. There is no need to decide which label fits before seeking support. We can begin with how life feels for you now.

How counselling may help

Counselling is not about being told to think positively or being given a quick solution. It provides an opportunity to speak honestly with someone who is trained to listen carefully and consider your experience with you.

Our conversations may help you recognise what contributes to your distress and notice patterns in how you respond when life becomes difficult. Understanding these patterns can create more choice in how you relate to yourself, other people and the situations you face.

We can also consider what currently helps you cope and whether some of those responses are still serving you. Withdrawing, keeping constantly busy or using alcohol to switch off may bring temporary relief while creating further difficulties over time. This can be explored with compassion rather than criticism.

Together, we can consider what is placing you under strain and how it is affecting your everyday life. The aim is not to force a quick solution, but to help you regain perspective and discover changes that feel realistic and meaningful to you.

When additional support may be needed

Persistent anxiety or low mood can sometimes require support from a GP or another healthcare professional. I may encourage you to seek additional help if your symptoms are significantly affecting your daily life or if counselling alone may not meet your needs.

Counselling is not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger or feel unable to keep yourself safe, please call 999, attend your nearest Accident and Emergency department or contact NHS 111 for urgent guidance.
