Men and therapy

Many men have learned that showing emotion is a sign of weakness, making anger feel safer than vulnerability. Counselling offers a confidential space to understand what lies beneath and find a different way forward.

Therapy for Men

Counselling is available to adults of every gender. This page focuses on men because many have grown up believing that personal difficulties should be dealt with privately. Expectations around strength and self-reliance can make seeking help feel like an admission of failure.

Determination can carry someone through demanding periods of life. Yet when carrying on becomes the only option, distress may be pushed aside until it becomes difficult to contain. It may show itself indirectly or leave someone feeling increasingly cut off from the people around them.

The consequences can be serious. In 2024, the suicide rate among males in England and Wales was just over three times the rate among females, according to the Office for National Statistics. Statistics cannot explain an individual life, but they underline why men need somewhere to turn before things become unbearable.

There is no expectation that you arrive with a polished account of what is wrong. A man may first come to therapy because something in the present has become difficult, only to recognise later that it connects with experiences he has carried for much longer.

I will not search for a hidden cause or steer the conversation towards subjects you would rather leave alone. You decide what enters the room. My part is to help bring shape to thoughts that may have been difficult to name and to notice possibilities that were not previously visible.

For some men, counselling may be the first occasion on which they have spoken plainly about what life is costing them. Being heard in this way can open the door to a less guarded and more settled way of living.
